Softball takes game two in split at Concordia Chicago

RIVER FOREST, Ill. – The Concordia University Wisconsin Softball team rebounded nicely with a 7-5 game two win, salvaging a split in a NACC doubleheader at Concordia Chicago Thursday. The Falcons dropped the opener, 11-3. CUW played as the home team, needing to move the games to River Forest because of unplayable field conditions in Mequon.

CUW 7, CUC 5
- The Falcons handed the Cougars their first NACC loss of 2018 in game two thanks to a 10-hit attack. Molly O'Connell (New London, Wis.) and Emma Schimberg (Random Lake, Wis.) each recorded three hits in the win, both players recording a double as well.

- CUW led 5-1 before the Cougars rallied to tie the game at five with three runs in the fifth and one in the top of the sixth. The Falcons would take the lead back with two runs in the bottom of the sixth, the go-ahead score coming on an RBI single by Schimberg. Schimberg would come around to score as well, making the final 7-5 in favor of the Falcons.

- The Falcons scored in each of their four trips to the plate, including two runs in the second to build a 5-1 lead after four innings. O'Connell had a two-RBI double in the second while Jamie Reiser (Ingleside, Ill.) put the Falcons on the board in the first with an RBI single, plating O'Connell. Schimberg recorded RBI hits in the fourth and sixth innings for the Falcons.

- Jenna Pozezinski (Lake Villa, Ill.) got the win for the Falcons, throwing two innings of relief in which she surrendered one unearned run. O'Connell delivered five strong for the Falcons as the starter.

- O'Connell and Schimberg each drove in two in the win as the Falcons got tremendous production from those two who hit back-to-back (9, 1) in the order. Maddie Zazas (Mundelein, Ill.) added two hits and a double for CUW.

CUC 11, CUW 3 (F/5)
- Game one was all Cougars as they scored four times in the first and added six runs in the third. CUC went up 11-0 with a score in the top of the fourth and CUW got its three runs in the bottom of the fourth.

- Concordia Chicago used the long ball to down the Falcons as Sydney Getz blasted two solo home runs and Taylor Kulaszewicz launched a three-run blast in the first inning.

- Marita Van dyke was the winning pitcher for the Cougars, throwing all five innings. Nicole Lewis (Manhattan, Ill.) took the loss for the Falcons and Carly Upmann (Monroe, Wis.) tossed two innings of relief.

- CUW will head right back to the CUC Softball Field in River Forest Saturday for a neutral site doubleheader against NACC-leading Marian. First pitch is set for 10 a.m.
