Softball Clamps Cougars, Extends Win Streak to 13

RIVER FOREST, Ill. - The Concordia Wisconsin softball team swept its doubleheader on Friday against the Concordia Chicago Cougars, pushing its winning streak to 13 contests. The day witnessed the Falcons outscored the Cougars 17-2 to move their all-time series record to 31-10.

The opening three innings saw Concordia Wisconsin build a steady lead, tallying one run in each frame. Senior Claudia Utz (Lockport, Ill.) and junior Jess Pozezinski (Lake Villa, Ill.) picked up RBI singles to mark the Falcons' first two runs before a home run by junior Jasmine Freeze (Bolingbrook, Ill.) pushed the lead to 3-0.

The Falcons brought multiple runs across the plate in the fourth inning, as junior Megan Bloyer (Oregon, Wis.) doubled home senior Madi Wheat (Coweta, Okla.) before Freeze collected another RBI by way of a sacrifice fly.

After a scoreless fifth, Pozezinski's 14th home run of the season got the Falcons back on the scoreboard. The solo shot broke her own program record of 13 home runs, set in 2022.

A trio of scoring plays in the final inning of the contest left the Falcons with an 11-run advantage, which started with an RBI single off the bat of senior Sydney Erdmann (Geneva, Ill.). After Wheat reached base on an infield single in the ensuing at-bat, Pozezinski put a three-run blast over the center field fence to mark her third-career multi-homer game. Freeze then closed the team's offensive outburst with a single up the middle to collect her third RBI of the day.

Junior Adrianna Martinez (Chicago, Ill.) brought her season record to 7-0 on the mound, tossing six frames while allowing just four hits.

To begin the second game, the Cougars collected their first lead of the day with a first-inning score.

The score stayed locked at 1-0 through the third inning, but the Falcons drew back to even in the fourth frame, as Pozezinski scored her fourth run of the day after a fielding error on an Utz steal.

Concordia Wisconsin broke free in the following inning, plating three scores to seize a 5-1 advantage. Wheat, Pozezinski and Utz tallied RBIs to give the Falcons breathing room on the scoreboard, which still saw security after the Cougars earned a run back in the bottom half of the frame.

Utz batted in the Falcons' sixth and final run of the game, marking her third RBI of the day.

Freeze earned her eighth win in nine starts, giving up just two runs in her six innings on the mound.

Concordia Wisconsin will look to grow its winning streak in its next set of games on Saturday, May 4 against the 31-7 Lakeland Muskies.
