Softball settles for split with Alverno

MEQUON, Wis. – The Concordia University Wisconsin Softball team opened NACC play Thursday, hosting Alverno in a league doubleheader. The Falcons ended up settling for a split with the Inferno, taking game one by an 8-3 score before falling, 6-2, in the nightcap.

CUW 8, ALVERNO 3
- The Falcons used the long ball to jump out to an early lead in game one as Jamie Reiser (Ingleside, Ill.) and Jenna Pozezinski (Lake Villa, Ill.) hit back-to-back home runs in the first. Reiser put CUW on the board with a two-run shot and Pozezinski followed with a solo home run.

- Both Reiser and Pozezinski, along with junior Sara Rosenow (Kimberly, Wis.) drove in two runs for the Falcons. Maddie Zazas (Mundelein, Ill.) collected three hits as her and Rosenow each doubled in the win. Allison Peters (Elk Grove, Ill.) added two hits for CUW.

- Nicole Lewis (Manhattan, Ill.) turned in another good start for CUW, allowing three runs, one earned, in four innings. She moved her record to 4-2 in the process. Pozezinski recorded her first career save, throwing the final three innings and allowing just two hits with one strikeout.

- The Falcons scored three times in the first and third innings, building a 6-2 lead after three. CUW would add two runs in the fifth in the game one win.

ALVERNO 6, CUW 2
- The Falcons fell behind 6-0 after four innings in game two and couldn't solve Alverno's Olivia Schneider. Schneider went the distance and punched out 10 Falcons, while allowing two runs and eight hits.

- The Inferno scored twice in the third and plated four runs in the fourth inning. CUW wouldn't get on the board until the sixth inning and added a run in the seventh for the 6-2 final. Pozezinski led the Falcons at the dish with two hits and an RBI. Peters and Zazas both doubled in the loss.

- Molly O'Connell (New London, Wis.) was the pitcher of record for CUW, throwing 3.2 innings. Pozezinski pitched the final 3.1 innings, allowing zero runs and striking out two.

- Carina Jimenez paced the Inferno offense collecting two doubles and driving in three runs from the ninth spot in the order.

UP NEXT
- CUW will visit Benedictine tomorrow for a NACC doubleheader, beginning at noon. The game was moved up from Saturday due to the anticipated inclement weather.
