Men's Tennis rolls past Dominican, into NACC Tournament Semifinals

MEQUON, Wis. – The Concordia University Wisconsin Men's Tennis team advanced to the semifinal round of the NACC Tournament after defeating Dominican University, 5-0, Monday afternoon at the CUW Tennis Courts.

The Falcons made quick work of the Stars on Monday, winning all three doubles matches and two singles matches before play was called due to the Falcons earning their fifth point. In a tournament setting, once a winner is determined, the other remaining matches go down as unfinished. The No. 1, 3, 5 and 6 singles matches were all unfinished Monday.

The win advances CUW to the semifinals where it will take on No. 2 MSOE. The semifinals and finals are scheduled for Saturday at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium with the Falcons and Raiders scheduled to start at 12:15 p.m. The other semifinal matchup will be between top-seeded Edgewood and No. 4 Wisconsin Lutheran.

CUW had no trouble in doubles play, winning all three matches easily. The most lopsided of those came at No. 2 doubles where the team of freshmen Ceejay Schaffner (Winona, Minn.) and Ryan Rogers (Iron River, Mich.) rolled to an 8-0 win.

The No. 1 doubles pairing of senior Benjamin Nommensen (Waupaca, Wis.) and freshman Brad Guendel (Greendale, Wis.) gained an 8-2 win, while the No. 3 duo of Trevor Budewitz (Watertown, Wis.) and Nick Gold (Waukesha, Wis.) netted an 8-1 win to give the Falcons a 3-0 edge after doubles play.

In singles play it was Nommensen at the No. 2 position and Rogers at No. 4 who picked up the wins for the Falcons to end the match at 5-0. Nommensen took his match 6-2, 6-1, while Rogers posted a 6-3, 6-0 victory.

The other singles players for CUW were Budewitz at the No. 1 spot, Schaffner in the No. 3 position, senior Steven Fritz (Berwyn, Ill.) at No. 5 and sophomore Jonathan Schotte (Preston, Kan.) at No. 6.
