The Concordia University Wisconsin Men's Tennis team defeated Marian University, 9-0, before falling to Edgewood College, 8-1, in a pair of NACC road matches on Saturday. The 1-1 day moves the Falcons to 6-2 in NACC play as they have clinched a spot in the upcoming NACC Tournament.

The Falcons began the day by dominating Marian, winning all three doubles matches and all six singles contests for the 9-0 win. The win over the Sabres featured the first ever collegiate wins for junior Yeongcheol Won (Hoengseong, South Korea) as he picked up a win at both No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles with freshman Nick Gold (Waukesha, Wis.).

Won picked up a victory in his singles match with a 6-1, 7-6 (7-3) decision. He and Gold then rolled to an 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles as the Falcons dropped just two points in three doubles matches. The No. 1 team of seniors Benjamin Nommensen (Waupaca, Wis.) and Steven Fritz (Berwyn, Ill.) cruised to an 8-0 win, while the No. 2 pairing of freshman Ryan Rogers (Iron River, Mich.) and sophomore Jonathan Schotte (Preston, Kan.) picked up an 8-1 victory.

All six singles matches for the Falcons were in straight sets, including Won's victory at No. 6 singles. Sophomore Trevor Budewitz (Watertown, Wis.) started the run with a 6-1, 6-2 win, while Nommensen followed suit with a 6-2, 6-2 victory at the No. 2 position.

Freshman Ceejay Schaffner (Winona, Minn.) netted a 6-1, 6-1 decision at No. 3 singles, while Fritz picked up a 6-1, 7-5 win at the No. 4 spot. The last singles match for the Falcons was a 6-1, 6-0 victory by Schotte at No. 5.

Against Edgewood, who is unbeaten in NACC play this season, the Falcons could only gain one victory, which came at No. 3 doubles. This time it was Gold partnering with Budewitz as the duo gained a hard-fought 8-6 win.

Edgewood would win the remaining two doubles matches and sweep singles play for the 8-1 win. Two of the six singles matches (No. 2 and No. 5) went to a third set tiebreaker, while three were finished in straight sets and one ended early due to a player retiring from the match.

The Falcons will return to the courts next Friday in a non-conference match at UW-Oshkosh. That matchup will be the Falcons final competition before the NACC Tournament begins the following week.
