Men's Tennis beats Simpson, falls to Colorado College to open spring trip
ORLANDO – The Concordia University Wisconsin Men's Tennis team won the second of two matches on its opening day of its Florida spring trip Monday, rallying to a 5-4 victory over Simpson. The Falcons opened the day with a 9-0 setback against Colorado College.
CUW (2-5) fell behind 2-1 after doubles play against Simpson but gained wins at No. 3 through No. 6 singles to pick up the 5-4 win.
All four of the Falcons singles victories were in straight sets, including a dominant 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 4 by freshman Brad Guendel (Greendale, Wis.). Freshman Ryan Rogers (Iron River, Mich.) also rolled to his No. 6 singles win, picking up a 6-2, 6-1 victory.
At No. 4 and 5 singles a pair of seniors gained wins for the Falcons in Benjamin Nommensen (Waupaca, Wis.) and Steven Fritz (Berwyn, Ill.). Nommensen cruised in his first set, winning 6-0 before picking up a 7-6 (7-2) win in the second set. Fritz picked up his win via a 6-3, 6-4 decision.
The Falcons also got one key victory in No. 3 doubles as the duo sophomore Trevor Budewitz (Watertown, Wis.) and freshman Nick Gold (Waukesha, Wis.) picked up the win. Budewitz and Gold defeated Simpson's number three doubles team by an 8-6 count.
In the opening match of the spring trip CUW was handled by Colorado College, 9-0. The Tigers cruised in singles play, winning all six matches in straight sets. CC also controlled doubles play, picking up two wins by an 8-3 score and one with an 8-0 mark.
The Falcons will be back in action tomorrow when they take on Bethel. CUW and the Royals are scheduled for a 1:30 pm (EST) start.
