Men's Tennis picks up NACC wins over Wisconsin Lutheran, Aurora

MEQUON, Wis. – The Concordia University Wisconsin Men's Tennis team picked up a pair of key NACC victories Saturday. The Falcons, playing at the CUW Tennis Courts for the first time, defeated Wisconsin Lutheran, 8-1, to open the day and followed that with a 6-3 win over Aurora.

The opening match of the day was a rematch of last year's NACC Tournament Final, which was won by Wisconsin Lutheran. The Falcons got some revenge on the Warriors Saturday morning with an easy 8-1 win.

CUW started the day off with a sweep in doubles play, taking a 3-0 lead over Wisconsin Lutheran. The No. 3 doubles team of freshman Nick Gold (Waukesha, Wis.) and sophomore Trevor Budewitz (Watertown, Wis.) had little problems in their No. 3 doubles match, rolling to an 8-1 victory.

The other two doubles matches were closer as freshmen Ceejay Schaffner (Winona, Minn.) and Ryan Rogers (Iron River, Mich.) gained an 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles, while senior Benjamin Nommensen (Waupaca, Wis.) and freshman Brad Guendel (Greendale, Wis.) picked up a hard-fought 8-6 at No. 1 doubles.

Singles play was also in favor of the Falcons as they won at all matches but No. 1 singles, where the Warriors Lee Johnson prevailed. CUW was dominant in the other five matches, winning all in straight sets for the 8-1 win.

Nommensen started things off with a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles, while Guendel followed suit with a 7-5, 6-4 victory at No. 3. Schaffner rolled to a 6-3, 6-4 No. 4 singles win for the Falcons for another straight sets win. The final two wins in singles play were by Rogers at No. 5 (6-0, 6-2) and senior Steven Fritz (Berwyn, Ill.) at No. 6 singles (6-4, 6-0).

In the second contest against Aurora it was the Falcons doubles teams who once again gave them an advantage by jumping out to a 3-0 lead. The duo of Gold and Budewitz was dominant once again, coasting to an 8-0 victory at No. 3 doubles.

Schaffner and Rogers had an exciting matchup at No. 2 doubles as they were able to rally for a 9-8 (7-4) victory, while Nommensen and Guendel picked up an 8-4 win as the No. 1 pairing.

In singles play, the Falcons and Spartans would split six matches for the 6-3 final. Aurora gained wins at No. 1 and 2 singles, while also picking up a third set tiebreak win at the No. 4 spot.

Gundel had little trouble in his No. 3 singles matchup as he netted a 6-2, 6-0 victory. Rogers was even more dominant at No. 5 singles, not allowing a set point for his opponent in a 6-0, 6-0 win. Fritz picked up the final win for the Falcons, a 6-3, 6-2 decision at No. 6 singles.

CUW (6-9, 4-1 NACC) will have another home match tomorrow at the CUW Tennis Courts, this time welcoming Lakeland to Mequon. The match is set to get underway at 11 am.
