Lawrence edges Men's Tennis in non-conference action

JACKSON, Wis. – Lawrence University used a 2-1 advantage in doubles play and a 4-2 edge in singles matchups to edge the Concordia University Wisconsin Men's Tennis team, 6-3, Friday night at the Pleasant Valley Tennis & Fitness Club.

The Falcons and Vikings had several close singles matchups Friday, four of the six going to a tiebreaker. LU and CUW split those four matchups that went to a tiebreaker, allowing Lawrence to gain the non-conference victory.

CUW picked up singles wins at the No. 2 and 5 positions. At No. 2 singles, freshman Ceejay Schaffner (Winona, Minn.) won 6-1, 5-7, 1-0 (10-8). Schaffner is now 3-0 in singles matchups this season.

In the No. 5 singles battle, senior Steven Fritz (Berwyn, Ill.) gained a 6-1, 2-6, 1-0 (10-7) victory. The rest of the Falcons singles matches went in the way of the Vikings, including tiebreaker victories at No. 3 and 4. Senior Benjamin Nommensen (Waupaca, Wis.) was edged at No. 3, falling 7-6, 3-6, 1-0 (10-4), while freshman Brad Guendel (Greendale, Wis.) dropped a 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (10-7) battle in the No. 4 spot.

In doubles play, the No. 3 team of sophomore Trevor Budewitz (Watertown, Wis.) and freshman Nick Gold (Waukesha, Wis.) improved to 2-0 this season with an 8-4 victory. Lawrence won at both No. 1 and No. 2 doubles.

The Falcons will be back in action next Friday in a non-conference tilt at Lake Forest College. The matchup between CUW and LFC is set to begin at 8:30 p.m.
