Women's Soccer falls in darkness-shortened match with Carthage

MEQUON, Wis. – Friday at Fitting Field had a little bit of everything weather wise as the Concordia University Wisconsin Women's Soccer team battled Carthage College. It started with rain, which led to a 35-minute lightning delay, followed by about 25 minutes of decent weather. Finally fog came in, then left, and ultimately darkness decided the match as CUW fell 2-1. The match was called with 9:03 to play due to darkness.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Falcons struck first, before even the lightning struck, as senior Brittany Klumpp (Rubicon, Wis.) netted her second goal of the season. The goal was also the 47th of Klumpp's career. Sophomore Kayla Schlosser (Germantown, Wis.) assisted on the score. 

- Lightning would be the next to strike, this coming in the 19th minute of the contest. Everyone needed to clear the field for 30 minutes, and once the two teams warmed up play resumed.

- Carthage came out strong out of the weather delay, scoring just over 10 minutes later. Erin Ganzke had the goal, while Danielle Noverini was credited with the assist.

- The Lady Reds would go on top of CUW in the 74th minute when Kayla Mcguinness struck for her first goal of the season. Carthage had a corner kick from Taylor Stenmark which was then shot by Noverini and saved by Falcons keeper Tabitha Ortiz (Plainfield, Ill.). Unfortunately for CUW, Mcguinness was there for the rebound to give the Lady Reds the one goal advantage.

- With CUW trying to sub with 9:03 remaining, the refs called the match due to darkness. The loss is the fifth straight for CUW, all by one goal.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Carthage improves to 9-0-0 against CUW since 2003, just three of those meetings coming in Mequon. The last two in Mequon have been decided by 2-1 scores.

- Ortiz finished with four saves for the Falcons. CUW finished with a 14-11 edge in shots, but Carthage had a 6-5 edge in shots on goal.

- Emily Furmanek got the win for Carthage, finishing with four saves.

UP NEXT
- The Falcons will begin their Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference title defense tomorrow by visiting Wisconsin Lutheran. The match is set for a 1 p.m. start.
