Wrestling Falls to Elmhurst
Mequon, Wis. – The Concordia University Wisconsin wrestling team dropped to 3-5 on the season following a 12-39 loss to the Elmhurst Bluejays Friday night at home.
The Falcons found themselves trailing early, 0-6, after the 125-pound match. However, freshman Anastacio Martinez (Albuquerque, N.M.) gave Concordia a spark in the 133-pound weight class, securing a fall victory over Donovin Fields to put six points on the board for the Falcons.
Elmhurst quickly responded, winning the next three bouts at 141, 149, and 157 pounds. The Bluejays outscored CUW 16-0 in those matches to take a commanding 16-6 lead. Sophomore Christopher Khaosanga (Jackson, Wis.) fought hard but was ultimately defeated by major decision in the third period in the 141 match. Meanwhile, junior Frank Budederi (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) and sophomore Mason Markham (Elkhorn, Wis.) both suffered losses by pin in the 149 and 157 battles.
After the 165, 175, and 184-pound matches, Elmhurst extended their lead to 39-6, putting the contest out of reach for the Falcons.
Despite the mounting deficit, junior Ruben Vasquez (Westminster, Calif.) continued to battle in the 197-pound class, facing Colin O'Neill. The match remained closely contested through the first two periods, but Vasquez pulled away in the third, securing a 12-6 decision victory and three points for the Falcons.
In the final bout of the evening, senior Peyton Smith (Milwaukee, Wis.) followed suit with a gritty performance in the 285-pound class. Smith earned a 4-2 decision victory to add another three points for Concordia.
The Falcons will look to bounce back next week as they continue conference action, heading to Aurora to face the Spartans on January 17 at 7:00 p.m.
