Wrestling Takes Part in NACC Showcase Duals

MEQUON, Wis. - The Concordia University Wisconsin wrestling team had the distinct honor of participating in the inaugural Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) Showcase Duals on Thursday at Lakeland University. This event featured four NACC teams: CUW, Lakeland, Aurora, and MSOE, competing in a dual-tournament format.

CUW finished the day with a 0-2 record, suffering losses to Aurora and Lakeland with scores of 6-45 and 12-40, respectively, bringing their season dual record to 3-10.

In the first match against Aurora, the Falcons fell 6-45, with their only points coming from a forfeit in the 197-pound bout, where junior Ruben Vasquez (Westminster, Calif.) earned a win. In the heavyweight match, senior Peyton Smith (Milwaukee, Wis.) faced a familiar opponent in Cam'Ron Harper. The intense battle went the distance, but Harper secured the victory by decision.

In the next dual, CUW faced the Muskies of Lakeland. After dropping the first match 0-6, the Falcons rebounded in the 133-pound bout, as freshman Anastacio Martinez (Albuquerque, N.M.) triumphed by decision, 8-1, over Nathan Schanen.

However, Lakeland extended its lead in the subsequent bouts, moving ahead 36-3 heading into the 197-pound match. Once again, Ruben Vasquez benefited from a forfeit, adding six points to CUW's total.

In the heavyweight round, Peyton Smith responded with a 7-3 victory over Diego Morales, narrowing the deficit. While the Muskies lost a point for unsportsmanlike conduct during that match, they ultimately defeated the Falcons 40-12.

Looking ahead, the Falcons will now turn their focus to the CCIW Futures Tournament on February 14th.
