Wrestling claims five individual titles at NWA Tournament

WATERTOWN, Wis. – Concordia University Wisconsin had a very successful day at the Northern Wrestling Association Tournament with five individuals winning trophies and the team taking first place.

Greg Sanders was named Outstanding Wrestler, while head coach Corey VanGroll was named NWA Co-Coach of the Year for his leadership of the Falcons program. CUW's five individual winners were the most in a single tournament this season.

Sophomore Sean Ambrocio (San Antonio, Texas) earned a major decision victory, 18-8, before pinning his next opponent in 1:20 to advance to the title bout in the 125 lb. weight class. In the title match he won a 9-4 decision to push his season record to 28-5.

Sophomore Greg Sanders (San Antonio, Texas) needed just two wins by fall to earn another individual title. He pinned his first opponent in 1:07 before sticking his championship opponent in just 19 seconds – the fastest of his career. Sanders' season record is now 34-2 at 149 lbs.

Senior Shawn Flom (Random Lake, Wis.) won his first title of the season at 165 lbs., unfortunately it was over his teammate Leonard Kuspa (junior, Oak Forest, Ill.) Flom won by fall in 2:18 to advance to the title bout where he won by major decision, 10-0, to improve his season record to 11-9.

Sophomore Casey Kenealy (Hartford, Wis.) grabbed the first individual title of his career at 174 lbs. He won by decision, 6-1, prior to a 12-2 major decision victory in the championship bout. Kenealy advanced his season record to 23-15.

Sophomore Jake Reuteler (New Berlin, Wis.) used an 8-6 overtime victory to win the 197 lb. weight division. It was the only bout of the day for him as he is now 14-11 this season.

CUW will now prepare for the NCAA Division III West Regional in Minneapolis, Minn., which is hosted by Augsburg College on Mar. 2.
