Men's Tennis stays perfect in NAC play with win over Wisconsin Lutheran
GLENDALE, Wis. – The Concordia University Wisconsin Men's Tennis team continued its perfect Northern Athletics Conference season by defeating Wisconsin Lutheran College, 7-2, in a league match Wednesday night at the Paley Tennis Center.
The Falcons continued their strong performances in singles play, winning five of six matches. CUW is now 35-1 in singles matches in conference play this season.
CUW (10-9, 6-0 NAC) gained four wins by straight sets in the singles spots, starting with junior Skip Turner (Eau Claire, Wis.) who netted a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles. Senior Taylor Shaffer (Stoughton, Wis.) gained a 6-0, 6-2 victory at No. 3 singles, while Antoine Leon (Draveil, Essonne, France) had little trouble at No. 4 singles, winning 6-1, 6-2. Also winning in straight sets was freshman Terry Jones (Maywood, Ill.) as he took his match 6-3, 6-1 at No. 6 singles. Junior Russell Johnson (Monticello, Wis.) used a tiebreaking set to defeat Lee Johnson of WLC 7-5, 3-6, 1-0 (10-3) at No. 1 singles.
WLC (6-7, 4-2 NAC) picked up a win at No.5 singles, as well as No. 1 doubles on Wednesday night, but CUW would take the remaining two doubles matches, both by 8-5 scores. Winning at No. 2 doubles was the duo of Johnson and Jones, while Leon and junior Garrett Wells (Aurora, Ill.) netted a No. 3 doubles victory.
The Falcons will continue their quest for another perfect NAC season this weekend with three matches over two days. That stretch will begin with CUW hosting MSOE (5-10, 4-1 NAC) at 4:00 p.m. Friday at the North Shore Country Club.
