Men's Soccer falls to Saint John's in first match of season

COLLEGEVILLE, MINN. – Michael Coborn of Saint John's University scored with just over 20 minutes left in action to give the Johnnies a 1-0 victory of the Concordia University Wisconsin men's soccer team. The match was the season opener for the Falcons.

Despite 38 total shots being fired between the two squads Coborn was the only player who could find the back of the net in a defensive battle at Haws Field. Junior Eric Vogel (Itasca, Ill.) was solid in net for the Falcons as he made 10 saves.

The Johnnies (2-0-0) also got strong goalie play as Ryan Brutger recorded the shutout, finishing with three saves.

CUW finished the game with 15 shots, including nine in the second half but were outshot by the Johnnies 23-15. Sophomore Keegan Van Dusseldorp (Burlington, Wis.) led the Falcons with all players with six shots. SJU was led by Sam Newman and David Wee, each player finishing with five shots.

CUW (0-1-0) will have a short turnaround as they return to the pitch tomorrow for a matchup against the University of Minnesota Morris at 3 p.m. UMM also opened their season against St. John's, as the two played Friday with SJU winning 5-1.
