Baseball takes opener of doubleheader with Benedictine

MEQUON, Wis. – The Falcons split a home doubleheader with the Eagles, with Concordia Wisconsin winning the opener 2-1 and Benedictine taking the closing game 15-6 on Monday.

THE BASICS
-Final Score: CUW 2, Benedictine 1 | Benedictine 15, CUW 6
-Records: CUW 8-12 (4-4 NACC), Benedictine 11-9 (4-3 NACC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
-In the first game, CUW got runs in back-to-back innings to take a 2-0 lead. In the first, Austen Dart (Algoma, Wis.) drove in a run to put the Falcons on the board. Then in the second, Christian Gerner (Mequon, Wis.) drove in one with an RBI double.
-In the eighth things got dicey as the Eagles loaded the bases with no outs. The Falcons managed to minimize the damage to a sac fly, as they got the Eagles to then pop out and strike out to get out of the inning with the lead intact.
-Bradlee Sumner (Ocala, Fla.) earned the win, allowing just one run in seven innings pitched while striking out five.
-Beau Wills (Coal City, Ill.) got his third save of the season, striking out three in two innings of work.
-In the second game, the Eagles scored in each of the first five innings to put 14 on the board.
-The Falcons scored four in the second to put a dent in the deficit. Sean Tillmon (Plainfield, Ill.) drove in a run with a single to start the mini-rally. Later, Tillmon scored on a balk, after which Gerner and Johannes Haakenson (Janesville, Wis.) hit back-to-back doubles to drive in runs for CUW.
-In the fifth, Tillmon drove in another with an RBI single.
-The Eagles scored once more in the ninth, though the Falcons matched the run in the same inning before the end as Joseph Zywiciel (Bolingbrook, Ill.) drove in a run.

UP NEXT
-The Falcons travel to face Ripon on Wednesday, April 10, starting at 2pm.
