Complete game efforts guide Baseball to sweep over Oberlin

TUCSON, Ariz. – Complete game efforts by seniors Andrew Mueller and Tyler Gross, along with some excellent hitting, lifted the Concordia University Wisconsin Baseball team to a sweep over Oberlin Saturday. The Falcons won the opener 8-2 before a 12-5 game two victory. CUW is now 5-6 on its spring trip with one more game scheduled for tomorrow.

THE BASICS
- Final Scores: Concordia Wisconsin 8, Oberlin 2 (Game 1); CUW 12, Oberlin 5 (Game 2)
- Location: Veterans Memorial Stadium – Tucson, Ariz.
- Records: Concordia Wisconsin 5-6; Oberlin 0-4

HOW IT HAPPENED
- In the opener it was Mueller (Horicon, Wis.) who went the distance as he allowed two runs in a complete game effort. He scattered eight hits and struck out four, while issuing just one walk. It was Mueller's first start since the 2013 season, as he missed the last two years due to injury.

- The Falcons gave Mueller plenty of run sport early, scoring three runs in the top of the first, and three more in the third for a 6-1 lead after three complete.

- Senior Brad Jacob (Raymond, Wis.) was one of two players with multiple hits in the opening game for the Falcons, finishing with a pair of doubles. Junior Mitchell Dubnicka (Hartland, Wis.) added two hits, while driving in a pair of runs.

- Eight different Falcons scored in the opening win, while sophomore Michael Szeszol (Lake Bluff, Ill.) also drove in two.

- In game two, Gross went the distance and was perfect through 4.1 innings. He finished the game allowing five runs, four earned. Gross did not issue a walk and struck out six in his first win of the season.

- CUW pounded out 14 hits in game two, including three each from sophomore Nathan Thyssen (Appleton, Wis.) and junior Isaac Tewes (Chaska, Minn.). Each player tripled, Thyssen's being the 13th of his career. He is now one way from tying the CUW career record, and has needed just 55 games to reach 13 triples.

- Leadoff man, junior Matt Schubert (West Bend, Wis.) had an outstanding game two for the Falcons. Schubert was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and four RBI. He doubled in the game, while Dubnicka doubled twice and drove in a run of his own. Sophomore Kyle Hilliard (Oak Forest, Ill.) added two hits for the Falcons.

- CUW built a 6-0 lead after four innings in game two, scoring once in the first, three times in the second and twice more in the fourth. The Falcons saw their lead cut to 6-3 with a three-run Oberlin fifth, but responded with a run in the fifth and five more in the sixth.

UP NEXT
- The Falcons will conclude their Arizona trip tomorrow with a game against George Fox. First pitch is set for 9 am (PST).
