Baseball drops two on opening day of Arizona trip

TUCSON, Ariz. – The Concordia University Wisconsin Baseball team ran into a hot-hitting St. John's team on the opening day of its 12-game spring trip, falling in a pair of games Saturday. The Johnnies won the opener 10-7 before taking down CUW by a 10-4 score in game two.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Johnnies combined for 28 hits in the two games as the Falcons had a hard time with their lineup. In the opener, SJU built a 9-3 lead after thanks in large part to four-run frames in the top of the second and fourth.

- The Falcons had a pair of big innings in the first game, scoring three times each in the second and fifth innings. Junior leadoff man Matt Schubert (West Bend, Wis.) led the way in game one with a pair of hits, including a two-RBI single in the third. Sophomore Justin Barney (Kenosha, Wis.) added two hits and an RBI as well in the opener.

- Senior Josh Ruppel (Belgium, Wis.) took the loss in game one, pitching two innings. The Falcons used six arms in game one, with freshman Brett Kolacki (Midlothian, Ill.) being the most effective, allowing no runs in one inning of work.

- Game two saw sophomore Nathan Thyssen (Appleton, Wis.) hit a home run in the first and a triple in the third but it wasn't enough as the Johnnies picked up a 10-4 win. SJU scored three times in the first, twice in the second and four more times in the third, building a 9-4 lead after three complete.

- Junior Andrew Heideman (Bakersfield, Calif.) was the pitcher of record in game two as the Falcons threw a pair of pitchers in the second contest. Sophomore Joey Schuman (New Lenox, Ill.) pitched the final three innings, allowing one run.

- Barney added three more hits and two RBI in game two, including a double as he finished the day with five hits.

THE OPPOSITION
- SJU was led by a host of players as they tallied nine extra-base hits in the two games. Gabe MacDonald had four hits, including a solo home run in the fourth in the opener, while Derek Schiebel paced SJU with two doubles and three RBI in game two.

UP NEXT
- The Falcons will be back at it tomorrow with a doubleheader against Sul Ross State of Alpine, Tex. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. (PST) – note tomorrow will be a two hour time difference from Wisconsin as Arizona does not utilize daylight savings time.
