Women's Hockey edged by No. 5 Adrian in NCHA battle

MEQUON, Wis. – While they may not have picked up a victory this weekend over the No. 5 Adrian College Bulldogs, the Concordia University Wisconsin Women's Hockey team certainly proved it can skate with any team it lines up against. One day after tying the Bulldogs 4-4, CUW was edged 2-1 in another thrilling NCHA matchup.

Facing a 2-0 deficit heading into the third period, sophomore Brandi Muller (Anchorage, Alaska) scored 2:50 into the final stanza to trim the Adrian lead to 2-1. CUW would put more pressure on Adrian over the final period, but Jade Walsh and the Bulldogs were able to escape the Ozaukee Ice Center with a 2-1 victory.

CUW never had the opportunity over the final minutes to pull goaltender Bridget Slater (Roseau, Minn.) as the Falcons were whistled for two penalties over the final 1:50 of play. Slater was outstanding on Saturday, finishing with 37 saves, including stopping all 23 shots she faced over the final two periods.

The only time Adrian was able to get past Slater was in the opening stanza, scoring two goals within a 4:10 span, building a 2-0 advantage with just over three minutes to play in the first. Rose Krasofsky gave the Bulldogs the lead on a breakaway goal at the 12:32 mark, while Logan Taylor pushed in a power play score at the 16:42 mark for the 2-0 lead.

After the Bulldogs opening power play score, the CUW shorthanded unit performed exceptionally, killing off the remaining five Adrian power play chances. The Falcons were whistled for 14 penalty minutes for the second straight night, the most they have been penalized this season. Adrian committed three penalties for six minutes in the box.

Muller's third-period goal was assisted by junior Katherine Pauletti (Roseville, Minn.) as she recorded her second point in as many days. The Muller score was the only time the Falcons could solve Walsh as the NCHA's leading goaltender finished with 21 saves on the day, improving her record to 12-0-3.

CUW (7-7-2, 3-5-1 NCHA) will return to action next weekend by visiting St. Scholastica for an NCHA series. The Falcons and Saints will open play at 4 p.m. next Friday.
