Women's Hockey home winning streak snapped by Cobbers

MEQUON, Wis. – The Concordia University Wisconsin Women's Hockey team entered Friday night's tilt against Concordia College Moorhead with an unblemished 4-0-0 record at the Ozaukee Ice Center this season. The visiting Cobbers were able to put the first blemish in the loss column, using three third period goals to skate past the Falcons, 4-0.

With the scoreboard reading 1-0 in favor of the Cobbers after 40 minutes of play, CCM used two goals scored 1:03 apart from one another to gain a 3-0 advantage with 10:35 remaining in the contest. Bekah Wright and Jess Nelson converted the two goals, which forced the Falcons to use their timeout midway through the final stanza. The goals were more than enough for Cobbers goaltender Andrea Klug who stopped all 24 shots she faced in picking up the shutout.

It was Cassey Petrich of CCM who recorded the game-winning goal at the 1:42 mark of the second period. Petrich's goal was assisted by Kelsey Vandegrift, who also had a helper on the Wright score at the 8:22 mark of the final period.

Petrich's game-winner came after a quick first period that saw very few stoppages of play. Neither team could get on the scoreboard after 20 minutes of play as the Falcons Andrea Mizanskey (Sr. - Palos Heights, Ill.) stopped all 12 shots she faced in the opening stanza. Mizanskey finished the game with 28 saves.

The first period also saw just one penalty called as the two teams combined for just four infractions during the contest. CCM (3-7-0) was whistled for high sticking late in the first period, but the Falcons couldn't capitalize with a power play goal despite several good scoring opportunities. CUW (5-5-1) was penalized three times in the second period and its penalty kill rose to the occasion each time, holding the Cobbers to 0-for-3 on the power play.

Libby Fransdal scored an unassisted goal late in the third period (17:29) to make the score 4-0 in favor of CCM. The Falcons finished the night with 24 shots, four coming off the stick of sophomore Brittany Sticha (Londsdale, Minn.). Sophomore Veronika Metanova (Palatine, Ill.) added three shots for CUW.

The two teams will conclude the weekend series tomorrow afternoon in a 2 p.m. puck drop from the Ozaukee Ice Center. Live coverage links will be available at CUWFalcons.com.
