Women's Hockey falls for first time in NCHA road play at Lake Forest

LAKE FOREST, Ill. – The Concordia University Wisconsin Women's Hockey team fell for the first time this season, suffering a 5-1 defeat at the hands of Lake Forest College Friday afternoon. The Foresters used three second-period goals to down the Falcons in the opening matchup of the Border Battle series.

A loss means CUW will need to defeat Lake Forest tomorrow night at the Ozaukee Ice Center to split the Border Battle series. If the Falcons win, a shootout will take place at the conclusion of the game to decide the series winner.

After taking a 1-0 lead late in the opening period, the Foresters struck three times during a 4:20 span, building a 4-0 advantage after 40 minutes of play. The latter two goals in the second period were scored 13 seconds apart, as Marissa Weber and Amanda Brunges struck for the third and fourth goals of the contest for LFC.

Emily Wybo scored two goals to pace the host Foresters, including a score with just 21 seconds remaining in the first stanza. Wybo would add the game's final tally, giving LFC the 5-1 conference victory.

The Falcons lone goal came in the third period as Anna Modrich (Franklin Park, Ill.) scored unassisted at the 6:01 mark. It was the first career goal for Modrich, which made the score 4-1 midway through the third.

Senior Andrea Mizanskey (Palos Heights, Ill.) was the goaltender for the Falcons Friday. Mizanskey finished the day with 20 saves. Her counterpart, Casey Hartfield, stopped 26 shots for the Foresters.

The Falcons actually held a shot advantage in the game, recording 27 compared to 25 for Lake Forest. The third period saw CUW control the puck throughout, resulting in a 14-2 edge in shots.

The struggles for CUW on the power play continued, resulting in a 0-for-3 night a player up. Lake Forest capitalized on 1-of-2 power play chances.

CUW (3-1-1, 2-1-0 NCHA) will return to the ice tomorrow night against Lake Forest. The game will also serve as "Pink in the Rink" as the Falcons partner with Angel on my Shoulder to help the fight against Breast Cancer. CUW and Lake Forest are set for a 7:30 p.m. puck drop.
