CUW Crushes Cornell

MEQUON, Wis. – The weather might have been cold and underwhelming, but the CUW men's lacrosse came out hot and shined against their old-conference foe in Cornell on Saturday. The Falcons finish non-conference play at 4-4 with the 16-9 victory.

Freshman Max Esposito (Gaithersburg, Md.) was the player on the scoreboard when he crashed the net off a quick pass from freshman Chase Drexler (Vernon Hills, Ill.).

Senior Keijo Day (Esko, Minn.) had a side-armed shot that closed the first-quarter scoring off an assist to freshman Pat Ryan (Western Springs, Ill.).

Max Esposito found the top shelf to start the scoring in the second quarter from an assist from Chase Drexler.

The Rams found their way onto the scoreboard at the 11:07 mark of the second quarter.

The Falcons offense exploded over an eight-minute stretch with six-straight goals from Keijo Day, senior David Bauer (Rogers, Minn.), sophomore Caleb Ruger (Grafton, Wis.), senior Chris Smith (South Elgin, Ill.), Chase Drexler and senior Jason Nordlie (Roscoe, Ill.).

CUW held a 9-2 lead going into halftime.

Keijo Day and Pay Ryan scored the first two goals in the third period to start the second half.

Chris Smith secured the final CUW goal of the quarter with a shot to the top of the net.

The Blue and White held a 12-6 lead going into the final frame.

Sophomore Adam Verner (Portage, Mich.) ran past his defender and put a shot in the net that the Cornell keeper did not see coming to start the scoring in the fourth quarter.

The Purple and White secured the next two goals before Keijo Day, freshman Hans Milchling (Cockeysville, Md.) and Max Esposito found the back of the net.

Junior Evan Leden (Waukegan, Ill.) earned his first collegiate victory with seven saves on Saturday.

The Concordia attack finished with 65 shots and 37 shots on frame. Keijo Day led all players with nine shots on goal.

The CUW defense caused 15 turnovers for Cornell. Sophomore Isaac Ober (Huntley, Ill.) led the flock with four.

The birds gobbled up 53 ground balls in the victory with junior Noah Brandt (Owatonna, Minn.) leading the way with eight. Brandt also won 18 faceoffs.

The Falcons open up NACC play on Saturday at Beloit.
