Day Breaks Scoring Record in Falcon Victory Over Hanover

MEQUON, Wis. – The CUW men's lacrosse team took on the Hanover Panthers in their first home matchup since March 5th against Monmouth.

The Falcons got hot early with an unassisted goal off the stick of senior Keijo Day (Esko, Minn.). 

Freshman Chase Drexler (Vernon Hills, Ill.) added a second, unassisted goal 50 seconds later.

Hanover answered with a goal five minutes later, but Day wanted to maintain the lead and netted his second unassisted goal of the afternoon.

Hanover cut the lead back to one with six minutes left in the first quarter, but both Day and freshman Max Esposito (Gaithersburg, Md.) netted unassisted goals to pull out to a three-goal lead heading into the second quarter.

It was all Falcons all day in the second quarter with six goals to the Panther singular. Two freshmen hooked up with Pat Ryan (Western Springs, Ill.) netting a goal off of an Esposito assist. Junior Jack Gromosky (Danville, Ind.) dished out a pair of back-to-back assists to both Day and Ryan to help the Falcons pull even further away with a score of 8-2.

Day netted his fifth and sixth goals of the matchup with helpers from Esposito and senior Kyle Fuller (Roseville, Minn.) to put the Falcons up 10-2. With his sixth goal, Day broke the school record for most career points. He ended the day with 200 career points.

Hanover snagged their only goal of the second quarter with two minutes remaining in the period, but Esposito pushed the Falcons back out eight with an unassisted goal with 23 seconds left in the half.

The Falcons snagged three goals in the third quarter. Day and Ryan scored the first two of the quarter with freshman Hunter Swazey (Escondido, Calif.) netting the third. Senior Chris Smith (South Elgin, Ill.) assisted on the Day goal and sophomore Caleb Ruger (Grafton, Wis.) assisted Ryan.

The Falcons scored four more goals in the final frame with the first coming from freshman Gio Nowotarski (Reading, Pa.). Sophomore Dylan Loftus (Chicago, Ill.) scored two goals the first with no assist and the second being assisted by sophomore Adam Verner (Portage, Mich.). Junior Matthew Sierzega (Grayslake, Ill.) added a goal as well that was unassisted.

The Falcons finished the matchup with 18 goals on 54 shots.  

Junior goalie Evan Leden (Waukegan, Ill.) led the trio of Falcon goaltenders with six saves on six shots faced in his 22:15 in net.

The Falcons head to Carthage on Wednesday before starting their conference schedule at the beginning of April.
