Men's Lacrosse limited in defeat at Carthage

KENOSHA, Wis. – Concordia University Wisconsin was limited to just one goal in each of the first three periods as Carthage College earned an important 10-6 Midwest Lacrosse Conference victory on Tuesday evening at Art Keller Field.

The Red Men outshot the Falcons by a 57-33 margin and cleared 17-of-18 attempts, as each team continued to battle for a spot in the league tournament. One downside for CUW was its six penalties for 5:30, which put pressure on its defense to slow down the highest scoring team in the league.

Despite playing shorthanded for a large amount of time, the Falcons did hold the Red Men to just 1-of-6 on man-up opportunities. They also won the battle in the face-off circle (11-8) and picked an equal amount of ground balls (25-25) during the 60 minutes of action.

Sophomore Matt Larsen (Gurnee, Ill.) and junior Justin Krause (Hartland, Wis.) each scored twice for CUW (8-6, 5-3 MLC). Junior Kyle Burrell (Calgary, Alberta) picked up five ground balls, while goalkeeper Zack Davis (junior, LaPorte, Ind.) made a career-best 18 saves.

Peter Slefinger finished with a game-high four goals for the Red Men (13-2, 8-0 MLC). Hunter Douglas had four ground balls and Dylan Roach caused four turnovers.

The Falcons were down by five goals three times during the first 45 minutes of play, but scored three-consecutive goals to get within two scores, 8-6. Junior Sam Wladyka (Winnipeg, Manitoba), Burrell and Krause each scored to give CUW a chance. The Red Men answered with a pair of unassisted goals to pull away in the final three minutes.

CUW returns to action on Wednesday at 4 p.m. against MSOE at Fitting Field.
