Brodie, Scholz provide spark in Men's Basketball victory over Dominican

MEQUON, Wis. – A late 11-2 scoring run by Concordia University Wisconsin in the final minutes on Saturday was enough to get past Dominican University, 69-63, in a close Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference game inside the R. John Buuck Field House.

After leading by double-figures in the first half, the Falcons found themselves in a battle down the stretch that had four scoring ties and six lead changes. Junior Mark Scholz (Greenfield, Wis.) and senior Steven Brodie (Oak Park, Calif.) provided a spark off the bench and ended with 16 and 15 points, respectively.

CUW (11-11, 9-8 NACC) overcame a poor performance from outside the 3-point line (15.8 percent) and at the free throw line (62.9 percent) with a decisive 33-8 advantage in bench production and had a 15-7 lead in second chance points. The Falcons also had a 43-35 difference in rebounding and stole 14 passes.

Sophomore Keith Kahlfeldt (New Berlin, Wis.) also had a team-high-tying 16 points, while sophomore Brett Boettcher (New Holstein, Wis.) finished with 10 points and five rebounds. Brodie's 15 points were a career-high, which included a perfect 5-of-5 effort at the free throw line.

Josh Mayberry led all players with 20 points, including four 3-pointers, eight rebounds and three steals. Taylor DeRoo added 16 points and Josh Ward tallied 11 points, including three long balls.

A major statistical difference in the contest was CUW's 35-9 advantage in free throw attempts.

The Falcons pushed their advantage to double-figures over the last couple of minutes in the opening half and seemed to be in control. However, over the course of just over eight minutes the Stars put together a 29-13 scoring run that spanned the first half and into the second half, which made the game interesting.

CUW returns to action on Tuesday against MSOE at 7 p.m. It is the final home game for the Falcons and the program will honors their four seniors following the game.
