Men's Basketball falls at Carroll in season opener

WAUKESHA, Wis. – Concordia University Wisconsin trailed from the start of its season opener at Carroll University, despite three players scoring in double-figure, before falling 90-71 inside the Van Male Field House.

The Pioneers (1-0) did their damage inside, as they outscored the Falcons 52-34 in the painted area. They also held an 18-2 advantage in second chance points after outrebounding CUW 35-26. A positive for the Falcons were their 20 points off 18 forced turnovers.

CUW (0-1) kept its deficit to single digits for 28 minutes, but couldn't gather itself offensively and shot just 35.7 percent (10-of-28) in the second half, compared to 55.0 percent (11-of-20) in the opening half of play.

Sophomore Keith Kahlfeldt (New Berlin, Wis.) led the Falcons with a career-high 20 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the field, while sophomore Bradley Prinsen (Oostburg, Wis.) and junior Mark Scholz (Greenfield, Wis.) each had career high scoring nights. Prinsen finished with 17 points, including two 3-pointers and 7-of-8 from the free throw line, and Scholz netted 15 points on 5-of-6 from the field, to go along with a game-high-tying three steals.

Senior Steven Brodie (Oak Park, Calif.) also added eight points off the bench. The Falcons did attempt 41 free throws in the game, but committed 21 turnovers in the opening game of the season.

Alec Molter tallied a game-high 22 points on 7-of-10 shooting and 8-of-11 from the free throw line to pace the Pioneers. Joe Pijanowski had 15 points, Kevin Hurd scored 14 points and dished out four assists, and Andrew Nottling ended with 12 points and five assists.

CUW returns to the court on Monday for a non-conference showdown at No. 13 UW-Whitewater. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
