Men's Basketball lights up nets in victory over Rockford

MEQUON, Wis. – Concordia University Wisconsin regained its offensive swagger on Saturday afternoon en route to a 103-91 victory over Rockford University inside the R. John Buuck Field House.

The Falcons shot over 50 percent (56.9) for the second-consecutive game and for the third time in a week span. They knocked down 10 3-pointers and made 19-of-22 free throws (86.4 percent), as they eclipsed the 100-point plateau for the first time in 49 games.

CUW (8-8, 6-6 NACC) led by just five points with 3:53 to go in the game before Eric Kittel started a 17-10 scoring run to the end the game with a 3-pointer and three-point play on the next possession. Four other Falcons also scored during the run.

The CUW bench came alive when needed in the victory and outscored the RU reserves 36-17. Junior Mark Scholz (Greenfield, Wis.) paced the Falcons backups with 13 points in 15 minutes of action. Senior Steven Brodie (Oak Park, Calif.) drained three long balls to provide a spark.

Sophomore Keith Kahlfeldt (New Berlin, Wis.) led all players with 23 points on 8-of-13 shooting. Sophomore Dustin Thumann (Marshfield, WIs.) tallied 13 points, while sophomore Bradley Prinsen (Oostburg, Wis.) and Kittel (freshman, Brillion, Wis.) each had 11 points. Kittel dished out a game-high six assists and stole two passes.

David Dixon led all players with 24 points, while Scott Suchy had 16 points, seven rebounds and two steals for the Regents (8-9, 4-8 NACC). Phil Andrade and Zach Wallace finished with 15 and 14 points, respectively.

The opening half featured three scoring ties and five lead changes, as the Falcons bench totaled 23 of the team's 48 points. They also held a 24-16 advantage in paint production. The turnaround in the first 20 minutes of play was a 26-7 scoring run over a seven minute and 22 second span for CUW.

RU slowly chipped away at its deficit and led by two points after a pair of Suchy free throws with 13:28 to play in the contest. CUW answered quickly with a Thumann layup, Kahlfeldt three-point play and a Taron Edwards (Racine, Wis.) layup just over a minute later.

The Falcons maintained their double-figure lead over the final two-plus minutes of play in front of a boisterous crowd featuring Ozaukee County Special Olympians.

CUW returns to the court on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. home contest against NACC foe Wisconsin Lutheran College.
