Falcons upset UW-Parkside
Kenosha
With almost everyone returning from a 13-13 team, Concordia looked
to be "improved" this season, but even the most optimistic Falcon
fan could not have predicted that the season would open with an 86-
81 overtime road win over D. 2 UW-Parkside.
CUW shot an amazing game-long 56% from the floor and added 24 of 30
from the charity stripe on Sunday afternoon. Coach Shawn Cassidy
substituted liberally, using 11 players, but it was easy to pick
two major heroes. Falcon forward Tyler Granrath hit all three of
his field goal attempts and made an amazing 17 of 19 free throws
besides pulling down 10 defensive rebounds. Center Kyle Barth
added 19 points on 7 of 9 shooting and added six rebounds as the
Falcons held their own inside and won the battle of the boards
39-31.
Neither team ever had a lead greater than 8 points but it took a 3
pointer at the regulation buzzer by Parkisde's Grant Johnson to
force the overtime.
In the extra session Granrath and senior guard John Ulrich (2-2)
combined to hit 9 of 10 charity tosses in the final minute of
overtime to sew up the impressive win. Parkside fell to 0-2 after
dropping a 63-50 decision to D. 1 UWM in their opener.
