Johnson named 2019-20 Male Athlete of the Year

MEQUON, Wis. -- Concordia Wisconsin's Atheltic Department has announced that Jordan Johnson of the Men's Basketball program has been named the 2019-20 Male Athlete of the Year.

The CUW Athletic Department announced its female and male career achievement winners last week (Sum Dunn, Molly O'Connell and Sam Schlosser) and on Tuesday Karoline Haugland was named the Female Athlete of the Year.

Johnson had his most impressive season to date, guiding the Men's Basketball program to a NACC Tournament Championship and a bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament. Along the way, he put up some impressive numbers that were headline-worthy and also sent the Falcon frenzy into euphoria, as he scored with ease and made the difficult shot look routine.

The junior scored 560 points (19.3) over the course of the season on 48.1 percent shooting (30.7 percent from 3-point range) and 85.2 percent at the free-throw line. He also added 6.1 rebounds, 2.9 assists, 1.2 steals and 0.6 blocks per game. He scored over 20 points in 13 games, surpassed the 30-point plateau three times and scored a program-record 45 points in a NACC Tournament semifinal game at Wisconsin Lutheran on February 27. During the scoring barrage, he outscored the Warriors 29-22 over the final 10 minutes of the game.

Johnson was named an All-NACC First Team honoree for the first time in his career after the season and has been recognized by the NACC in some capacity each year of his career. His 560 points this season were 20 points shy of tying the single-season record and also ranked 38th nationally. The 6-foot-6 guard set the program record with 201 field goals made and 418 field goals attempted. He also made 127 free throws (second-most in the NACC) and drained 85.2 percent at the free-throw line (fourth in the NACC).

One area where Johnson excels is making the mid-range jumper and around the rim, making 170 of his 201 field goals during the season inside the 3-point arc. If you remove his long-range attempts, his field goal percentage goes from 48.1 to 53.6 percent. What gets lost in the flow of the game sometimes, is his ability to help in other ways besides scoring. This season he dished out the most assists, stole the most passes and blocked the most shots in any season of his career. He also tied last year's rebounding total of 176.
