Women's Tennis wins season-opener over Carroll

MEQUON, Wis. – Concordia Wisconsin built an early lead after doubles competition and took care of business early during singles play to defeat Carroll, 5-4, in a non-conference matchup during the season opener. It was the first time the Falcons have defeated the Pioneers in nearly a decade.

HOW IT HAPPENEND
- The Falcons jumped out to a 2-1 lead after doubles pairing of sophomore Ashley Solberg (Waukesha, Wis.) and junior Elizabeth Carroll (Hartford, Wis.) defeated their No. 1 opponents 8-2, while junior Sabine Jacobsen (Palatine, Ill.) and senior Michaela Wagner (Oswego, Ill.) won 8-3 at No. 3 doubles.
- CUW won three of the first four singles matches that completed to earn the exciting victory. Solberg captured a 6-4, 6-3 to top her No. 1 singles opponent and give the hosts a 3-1 advantage.
- Elizabeth Carroll followed suit and picked up a difficult 1-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-8) win at No. 4 singles to get CUW even closer, with a 4-1 lead.
- The deciding fifth point was earned by sophomore Bailey Kelly (Racine, Wis.) who recorded a 4-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-8) victory at No. 3 singles.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- The Falcons win over the Pioneers with the first since Oct. 3, 2006 when they won 6-3 on the road. As well, it was the first victory over Carroll in the last eight attempts.
- In all, four of the six singles matches needed tiebreakers before a decision was final.
- It was the third-consecutive season CUW played Carroll to begin its season.

NEXT ON THE SCHEDULE
- The Falcons travel to Lakeland to begin NACC play and their title defense with a 4 pm match next Wednesday.
