Diaz nets overtime score as Men's Soccer slips past Lawrence

APPLETON, Wis. – For the second time in a week, the Concordia University Wisconsin Men's Soccer team scored early in overtime to pick up a non-conference road victory. On Tuesday night, it was freshman Dagoberto Diaz who provided the game-winning goal for the Falcons, scoring 1:52 into the extra session and allowing CUW to escape from Lawrence University with a 2-1 win.

THE BASICS

Final Score: Concordia Wisconisn 2, Lawrence 1 (F/OT)
Location: The Banta Bowl – Appleton, Wis.
Records: Concordia Wisconsin 7-2-1, Lawrence 1-7-1

HOW IT HAPPENED

- It appeared the two teams would head into halftime scoreless as the first 44 minutes were played without a goal Tuesday. The Falcons changed that however on a goal from sophomore defender Jeremy Jenich (Mundelein, Ill.) in the 45th minute, making the score 1-0 at the break.

- Lawrence would tie the match at 1-1 in the 58th minute when Robert Desotelle netted the Vikings only score of the evening. Desotlle's goal was assisted by Max Loebl and Keanan Wilson.

- The Falcons converted the game-winner just 1:52 into overtime as Diaz (Woodburn, Ore.) took a pass from senior defender Bobby Russ (Wauwatosa, Wis.) and scored, allowing the Falcons to get out of Appleton with the win.

- Sophomore Killian Mielotz (Grafton, Wis.) faced just two shots in the win as the Falcons controlled possession throughout. Mielotz earned his second win of the season with two saves. CUW finished with a 19-4 advantage in shots.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

- The Falcons hadn't won an overtime match since 2009 up until last week's win at UW-Whitewater. It appears the fortunes have turned for CUW as it has now posted back-to-back wins in overtime, and has done so by scoring early into the extra session on both occasions.

- Tuesday was the final non-conference match for the Falcons of the regular season and they closed that portion of their schedule out on a strong note. CUW finished non-conference play with a 6-1-1 record.

- The goal for Jenich marked his first career point in his collegiate career, a player known obviously for his defense. The outside back was playing in his 25th match, which included 19 starts last season.

THE OPPOSITION

- Lawrence received a strong performance from goalkeeper Joe Krivit. Krivit made eight saves during the match, four of those coming in the second half.

UP NEXT

- The Falcons will play nothing but conference matches from here on out and that begins with a Saturday showdown against Aurora. The matchup at Fitting Field is set for a 1 p.m. start.
