Men's Soccer Shuts Out Lakeland

Written by CUW Student Assistant Lance Schulteis

PLYMOUTH, Wis. - The CUW men's soccer team brought its 2023 campaign to an ultimate 6-9-2 record on Wednesday night by way of a 4-0 shutout victory over the Lakeland Muskies. The win improved the Falcons to 4-6-2 in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play.

The Falcons and Muskies both entered the match seeking to rebound from losses, in search of positive conclusions to their regular seasons. The two squads were deadlocked throughout the first half, as despite a fair number of scoring opportunities, neither team was able to put the ball past the other's goalkeeper to secure the game's first lead. However, the second half of the contest would see an onslaught of goals, all of which came off the feet of the Falcons.

Just over 10 minutes into the second half, Concordia freshman Joey Moua (Eau Claire, Wis.) collected his sixth goal of the season off of an assist from freshman Vladamir Campos (Milwaukee, Wis.). Just minutes later, sophomore Carson Kelly (Fond Du Lac, Wis.) buried his fourth tally of the season on a penalty shot, suddenly giving the Falcons a comfortable two-goal lead in the match.

Senior Angel Uriostegui (Grayslake, Ill.) would get in on the action in the game's 80th minute, depositing a pass from junior Alishan Sharipov (Krasnodar, Russia) into the back of the Muskies' net.

Senior Ivan Cueller (Milwaukee, Wis.) would contribute his name to the scoresheet as well, burying the team's second penalty shot goal of the game late in the contest. The score marked his fifth of the season, granting him his fourth season in a Falcons uniform with five or more goals scored.

Falcons' sophomore goalkeeper Jeremy Munoz (Milwaukee, Wis.) would finish the match with a perfect 1.00 save percentage, collecting four saves.

While the Falcons placed themselves within reach of postseason contention, the terms of the NACC tiebreaking procedure with Edgewood would leave Concordia out of the playoff picture.

Not to be overshadowed by the looming resolution of the season, the Falcons put up impressive numbers in their final game. The shutout victory marked the team's fifth such win of the season, and the four-goal outburst in the second half secured the team's second-highest-scoring game of the 2023 campaign.
