Comeback bid at MSOE comes up short for Men's Soccer

MILWAUKEE – The Concordia University Wisconsin Men's Soccer team was unable to erase a 3-0 deficit Saturday in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference matchup against MSOE. The Falcons battled back late, but came up one goal short in a 3-2 setback, the team's first conference loss of the season.

THE BASICS

- Final Score: MSOE 3, Concordia Wisconsin 2
- Location: Viets Field – Milwaukee
- Records: CUW, 6-2-1, 1-1-0 NACC; MSOE, 7-2-0, 2-0-0 NACC

HOW IT HAPPENED

- The Raiders raced out to a 2-0 lead just 16:44 into play with goals by brothers Braden and Logan Andryk. Braden put MSOE up 1-0 in the 10th minute off an assist from Logan, while Logan added an unassisted score in the 17th minute.

- The 2-0 score would remain until halftime but MSOE scored 8:58 into the second half when Logan Andryk converted a penalty kick, making the score 3-0.

- The Falcons wouldn't go away quietly as junior Sean Cropper (Green Bay, Wis.) put them on the scoreboard in the 69th minute. Freshman Gavin Falotico (Palatine, Ill.) executed the long throw-in to perfection, finding Cropper for the CUW score.

- CUW against cut into the Raiders lead under seven minutes later when freshman Juan Serna (Milwaukee, Wis.) netted his second goal of the season. Sophomore Jake Swihart (Oostburg, Wis.) found Serna on a centering pass and Serna converted from 15 yards out to make the score 3-2.

- That would be all the scoring as MSOE held on for the 3-2 win, dealing the Falcons their first conference loss of 2015.

- Both teams did a good job of converting on shots on goal as of the eight shots which went on goal, five went in. MSOE made three of its four shots which went on goal.

- The Falcons were without starting goalkeeper Alec Brew (senior – Appleton, Wis.), who was out with an injury.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

- Both teams entered play among the best in the Central region. MSOE was ranked fifth in the latest NSCAA Central Region poll, while the Falcons were receiving votes.

- Senior Keegan Van Dusseldorp (Burlington, Wis.) led all Falcons with four shots in the match. Logan Andryk paced the Raiders with five shots, as MSOE held a 14-11 advantage in shots.

- Despite the loss, CUW is still 10-4-3 in matches against the Raiders dating back to the 2003 season. The series has been more even as of late as the two teams are 3-3-1 against each other since 2011.

THE OPPOSITION

- The Andryk brothers accounted for all of the Raiders scoring on Saturday, as it has been much of the season. They have accounted for 48 of the Raiders 72 points this season.

- Jeff Clements made three saves to pick up his fifth win of the season for MSOE.

UP NEXT

- The Falcons will visit Lawrence for a non-conference matchup. The final non-conference contest of the season for CUW begins at 7 p.m. Tuesday night.
