Men’s Hockey sweeps St. Scholastica

MEQUON, Wis. – The CUW men's hockey team stayed atop the NCHA North Division with a commanding 5-1 victory over St. Scholastica on Saturday evening to improve to 2-0-0 in the NCHA.

"It was a good team bonding weekend," said head coach Bill Horton. "We had a couple of chippy games bring the team together. We are building up a lot of positive momentum to keep rolling through divisional conference play. Some guys had their first NCAA goals which is always great to see."

The Saints first again on Saturday night with a goal in the second period.

Senior Nick Guiney (Victoria, B.C.) evened the score with a power-play goal in front of the net from passes from senior Braydon Barker (Red Deer, Alta.) and senior Cole Pickup (Victoria, B.C.).

Cole Pickup gave the Falcons the lead with a five-hole shot and the Falcons never looked back. Nick Guiney and senior Luke Ranallo (St. Paul, Minn.) were credited with the assists.

Freshman Sean Hofstetter (Columbia, Ill.) scored his first collegiate goal with 39 second left in the second period. The CUW freshman scored off passes from junior Brandon MacKinnon (Etobicoke, Ont.) and Braydon Barker.

The Guiney brothers did damage in the third period against the Saints.

Freshman Jordan Guiney (Victoria, B.C.) scored his first collegiate goal at the 10:21 mark with assists to Braydon Barker and freshman Tyler Pang (Victoria, B.C.).

14 seconds later, Nick Guiney scored on a steal and score to finish the scoring.

Freshman Liam McGarva (Fort Saskatchewan, Alta.) secured 37 saves in the victory.

CUW held a 41-38 shots advantage on Saturday, 41-38. Nick Guiney led the flock with seven shots.

Nick Guerra helped the Falcons maintain possession with 17 faceoff victories on Saturday night.

The Falcons return to play on Thursday at Finlandia.
