Field Hockey’s Journey Ends in SAA Semifinals

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Saturday saw the CUW field hockey squad's season come to an end. The Falcons fell 3-1 against the Colonels of Centre College in the SAA Quarterfinals.

Neither team could find the back of the cage in the first period, as the score remained 0-0 heading into the second quarter.

But nearly two minutes into the second quarter, the Colonels scored the game's first goal, to take the 1-0 lead. Just 38 seconds later, Centre would double their lead to make it 2-0. Then, with 4:23 left in the second quarter, the Colonels would put one past the Falcons' goalkeeper to secure the 3-0 lead heading into halftime.

The Falcons would not go out without a fight, as they recorded three shots in the third quarter and two shots in the fourth after recording zero shots in the first half.

With 1:32 remaining in the game, senior Abby McGue (St. Louis, Mo.) put the Blue and White on the scoreboard with an unassisted goal to cut the Colonel lead to 3-1.

But it was too little too late for the Falcons, as the comeback effort fell short, as the flock ultimately fell 3-1, ending their 2023 season.

Senior goalkeeper Halli Schneiderwendt recorded 14 saves in her 60 minutes of play. Also on the defensive end was sophomore Katelyn Cardinale (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) and freshman Gabby Mano (Canton, Mich.) recorded defensive saves.

Offensively, CUW was led by Abby McGue who had a team-high two shots on goal, while senior Berit Poirier (Vista, Calif.) and freshman Lotta Bruder (Frankfurt, Germany) both had a singular shot on goal.

Centre advances to the SAA Tournament Finals and will take on the Lynx of Rhodes for the SAA Tournament title.

The Falcons finish the season with a 4-13 record.
