Falcons Fall to Rhodes

MEQUON, Wis. - The Concordia University Wisconsin field hockey team returned to Tomasini Stadium to resume Southern Athletic Association (SAA) play on Saturday when they hosted the Lynx of Rhodes College.

The Lynx got the best of the Falcons and came away with the 5-2 victory, sending CUW's record to 2-11 on the year and 1-5 in conference action.

The first quarter saw Rhodes take the 3-0 lead.

With 10:20 remaining in the second quarter, freshman Emily Robertson (Canton, Mich.) found the back of the net, putting in the rebound near the cage following a shot that was fired from senior Sarita Arsham (Houston, Texas) and bounced off the Lynx's goalie to cut Rhode's lead to 3-1.

Following the goal, the Blue and White's defense kept the Lynx scoreless for the remainder of the second quarter to keep the score 3-1 heading into halftime.

The Lynx would regain their three-goal advantage in the third quarter on a breakaway goal to take the 4-1 lead heading into the final quarter of play.

Determined to mount the comeback, the Falcons continued to apply pressure on the Rhodes defense. With 12:40 remaining in the fourth quarter, senior Berit Poirier (Vista, Calif.) found fellow senior Alex Klamm (Glen Carbon, Ill.) streaking on the right side of the field. With the ball on her stick and fast approaching the goal, Klamm ripped the tight-angle shot past the kick-save attempt of the Lynx goalie to cut the Rhode's lead to 4-2.

Rhodes College responded four minutes later with a goal of their own, coming off the penalty corner to secure the 5-2 victory.

In the loss, on the offensive end, sophomore Katie Quirke (Antioch, Ill.) led the Falcons with three shots on goal.

Defensively, senior Halli Scheiderwendt (Appleton, Wis.) totaled one save, while freshman Parks Cawthray (Oakville, Ont.) racked up four saves. Emily Robertson and fellow freshman Leah Mouganis (Pittsburg, Pa.) recorded one defensive save each.

The Blue and White will have a quick turnaround and shift their attention to conference opponent Sewanee and host the Tigers on Sunday, Oct. 22nd, at 11 a.m.
