Field Hockey Closes Out Regular Season

MEQUON, Wis. – Saturday saw the Concordia University Wisconsin field hockey team close the regular season at Tomasini Stadium against in-state opponent Sabres of Marian University.

To bring awareness and show their support to the victims and survivors of domestic violence, the Falcons sported purple ribbons.

Saturday's contest saw the Sabres take the close 2-0 victory over the Falcons, moving CUW's record to 3-12 overall and 2-6 in Southern Athletic Association play.

Marian took the quick lead, finding the back of the cage in the first 57 seconds of play.

Senior Halli Schneiderwendt (Appleton, Wis.) kept the game close for the Falcons, recording three saves in the first quarter to keep the score 1-0 in favor of Marian.

With 11:53 remaining in the second quarter, Marian extended their lead to secure the 2-0 lead.

Coming out of halftime, neither team could find the back of the net, as CUW headed into the final 15 minutes of play down 2-0.

Determined to mount the comeback, the Falcons picked up the pressure in the fourth quarter. In total, the Blue and White fired off six shots and triggered four penalty corners in the fourth quarter alone. But the Sabres' defense was equally determined to complete the shutout as Marian kept the Falcons scoreless in the fourth quarter despite the CUW scoring opportunities.

Ultimately, the Falcon's comeback efforts fell flat, as they suffered a 2-0 loss to conclude their regular season.

Sophomore Katelyn Cardinale (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) and freshman Caitlyn Weitzel (Fallston, Md.) led the Falcons offensively, as they both recorded two shots on goal, while seniors Berit Poirier (Vista, Calif.) and Alex Klamm (Glen Carbon, Ill.) both had a shot on goal.

Meanwhile, Halli Schneiderwendt totaled 13 saves for CUW.

The Falcons will now turn their attention to the South Athletic Association Tournament Quarterfinals, set for Nov. 3rd, in Memphis, Tennessee, as the Blue and White are slated to take on the Tigers of Sewanee, a team that the Falcons defeated twice in the regular season with scores of 2-1 and 1-0.
