Field Hockey Overwhelms Oberlin

RICHMOND, Ind. – The Concordia Wisconsin field hockey team returned to the win column on Sunday afternoon with a convincing 3-1 victory over Oberlin. The victory over the Yeowomen sends Concordia to 1-1 on the year.

The Yeowomen were the first team onto the scoreboard on Sunday with a goal in the fourth minute.

Five minutes later, freshman Bella Vandeloecht (St. Louis, Mo.) scored her first collegiate goal. She found the ball open in front of the net in a scrum of players and knocked the ball in to tie the game.

The Falcons claimed the lead in the 36th minute on a penalty corner from freshman Caitlyn Weitzel (Fallston, Md.). Senior Sarita Armsham (Houston, Texas) showed her speed and zipped past a defender to find freshman Leah Mouganis (Pittsburg, Pa.) to her right and Mouganis lofted the ball over the defense and into the cage for her first goal as a Falcon.

Caitlyn Weitzel closed the scoring in the fourth quarter when Oberlin was trying to clear the ball out of the zone, but Weitzel reclaimed possession and sent a laser into the back of the cage to close the book on Oberlin.

The Concordia defense was strong again on Sunday and only allowed three shots. Senior Halli Schneiderwendt (Appleton, Wis.) recorded two saves against Oberlin. Freshman Parks Cawthray (Oakville, Ont.) earned her first collegiate victory on Sunday afternoon.

Sarita Arsham led the Concordia attack with two shots against Oberlin.

The Falcons pressured the Yeowomen all afternoon and drew 10 penalty corners.

Concordia will rest up and return to action and host Maryville on Sunday on the shores of Lake Michigan.
