Field Hockey Sinks Sewanee in the SAA Quarterfinals

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Concordia Wisconsin field hockey team opened the Southern Athletic Association Field Hockey Tournament on Friday afternoon. The Falcons shot down Sewanee in the quarterfinals, 2-0, to advance to Saturday. The Falcons are now 4-12 on the year.

The Falcons plastered five shots on goal in the first quarter against Sewanee. Freshman Maddie Rider (Danville, Pa.) and sophomore Katie Quirke (Antioch, Ill.) both had two shots and senior Sarita Arsham (Houston, Texas) also had a shot on net.

Neither team could throw a shot on the net in the second quarter.

Senior Berit Poirier (Vista, Calif.) started the second-half attack with a shot that was kicked away.

Sarita Arsham fired a shot that went just wide on a penalty corner for the Falcons.

The Tigers marched down the field and forced a penalty corner and had their first shot of the day that went wide.

The Falcons struck again on a penalty corner when senior Sophia Vandeloecht (St. Louis, Mo.) crashed the net and recorded a shot.

The Falcons finally broke through with a goal in the 42nd minute when Sophia Vandeloecht tapped in the ball from a foot out, on a tap-in on a shot from freshman Lotta Bruder (Frankfort, Germany).

Lotta Bruder scored on the final play of the game on a penalty corner.

The Falcons outshot Sewanee on Friday, 18-1.  Katie Quirke led the contest with four shots.

Concordia Wisconsin also held a 9-3 advantage in penalty corners on Friday.

Senior Halli Schneiderwendt (Appleton, Wis.) collected her third shutout of the season.

The Falcons will face top-seeded Centre on Saturday in the SAA Tournament Semifinals.
