Women's Volleyball Torches the Inferno

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Head Coach Carly Wehling and the Concordia Wisconsin women's volleyball program made quick work of Alverno on Thursday night. The Falcons swept the Inferno with a 25-15, 25-16, 25-12 victory to improve to 10-7 on the campaign and remain atop the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference standings at 5-0.

The Inferno held close to the Falcons in the first set, but the Falcons broke away leading 10-9 with an 11-2 run. A service error ended the set at 25-15. Sophomore Stella Zarling (West Bend, Wis.) led the attack with four kills.

The Falcons scored the Inferno with eight service aces in the second set. Sophomore Izzy Sternig (West Bend, Wis.) landed three, with sophomore Mickenzi Benter (De Pere, Wis.) and Stella Zarling adding two each. Senior Maycee Karpfinger (Wauwatosa, Wis.) burned Alverno with four kills, a service ace and a block in the set.

The Third set was all Falcons on Thursday night. The Blue and White ballooned the lead up to 12 points on two separate occasions before an attacking error was the final nail in the coffin at 25-12. Five Falcons landed a service ace in the set with Izzy Sternig, Mickenzi Benter, sophomore Noelle Smith (Davenport, Iowa), sophomore Izzy Lutz (West Bend, Wis.) and freshman Kate Wilson (Lake in the Hills, Ill.) all getting in on the action.

Offensively, the Falcons were led by Stella Zarling with eight kills, followed by Maycee Karpfinger with seven and sophomore Jaydin Vosters (Neenah, Wis.) and Noelle Smith with six each. Mickenzi Benter brought in 20 assists to lead the match. Izzy Sternig finished with a career-high four service aces.

Sophomore Abby Proefrock (Grafton, Wis.) picked up nine digs on Thursday.

CUW finished with a season-high of 15 service aces against the Inferno. The .312 hitting percentage was also a season-high performance.

The Falcons return to play on Saturday at Edgewood, where they will face the Eagles and Carroll in a triangular tournament.
