Falcons Pounce On Platteville

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Concordia University Wisconsin women's volleyball team hit the road Friday morning to compete in the Calvin Invitational. In their tournament opener, the Falcons took down the Pioneers of UW-Platteville in four sets. The Falcons defeated the Pioneers, who were receiving votes in this week's AVCA Division III rankings, to improve to 6-6 on the year.

The first set saw the Falcons jump to an early 12-4 lead. CUW held on to their lead throughout the opening set, giving CUW the 23-17 lead. CUW sophomores Stella Zarling (West Bend, Wis.) and Ashley Habermehl (Brookfield, Wis.) then each had a kill to give CUW the 25-17 first set victory.

With the score tied 15-15 in the second set, UW-Platteville pulled away from Concordia to take the second set 25-19.

The third set was a back-and-forth affair between the Falcons and Pioneers, as neither team was able to establish a sizable lead. With the score tied at 18, the Falcons went on a 6-3, which included a pair of kills from Ashley Habermehl, to give CUW the 24-21 lead. The Falcons would take the third set 25-23 following a Pioneer attacking error.

UW-Platteville jumped out to a quick 11-6 lead to start the fourth set. CUW then posted a 12-2 run to tie the lead 17-13, which included kills from senior Maycee Karpfinger (Wauwatosa, Wis.) sophomore Noelle Smith (Davenport, Iowa) and junior Brenna Bieniek (Shakopee, Minn.). The run also included a service ace from Stella Zarling. Later in the set, the Pioneers went on a run of their own to bring the score to within one point. But the Falcons remained composed and pulled out the 25-21 fourth set victory.

In the win, Ashley Habermehl led the Falcons with 13 kills, while Maycee Karpfinger added 12. Meanwhile, sophomore Mickenzi Benter (De Pere, Wis.) led the Blue and White with 32 assists. On the defensive side, sophomore Abby Proefrock (Grafton, Wis.) recorded a game-high 18 digs.

The Falcons will have a quick turnaround and will resume their play at the Calvin Invitational against the Quakers of Earlham College on Saturday at 11 a.m.
