Volleyball Earns AVCA Team Academic Award

MEQUON (CUWFalcons.com) - The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) announced that Concordia University Wisconsin finished among the nation's top programs to earn the AVCA Team Academic Award for the 2010-11 school, year after accumulating a team grade point average of 3.46. The Falcons shined in the classroom throughout the year to earnthe award for the eighth-consecutive year.

The award honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative GPA. Less than 20 percent of the nation's volleyball teams received the award.

"I am ecstatic that the volleyball program was honored with this award," said volleyball head coach Joe Cawley. "Our CUW volleyball players exemplify the term student-athlete each and every year. Prior to each season we sit down as a program and emphasize the goals of achieving academic excellence, and they excelled not only on the court, but also off the court. I am once again proud of our team."

The Falcons completed a historic 2010 season, tying the program record for victories (23), which also included a 14-match winning streak and an 11-1 Northern Athletics Conference record. The program was led by Stephanie Boehm (De Pere, WI) who was named AVCA Honorable Mention All-America and NAC First Team All-Conference. Also, Cawley earned his 200th career victory in a three-set sweep over Alverno College on Oct. 8.

Fifteen players were recognized by the NAC in July for their work in the classroom, earning a grade point average of 3.25 or higher for the 2010-2011 academic year. The 15 student-athletes were (alphabetically):

CUW begins its season with the Concordia Invitational Volleyball Tournament (CIVT) - hosted by Concordia University Chicago - on Sept. 6 at 6 p.m. against Concordia University Texas.
