Wresting Works at Wheaton

WHEATON, Ill. – The CUW wrestling team headed to Wheaton for the Pete Wilson Invitational this weekend.

The Falcons sit at 19 total team points for the invite. The University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire currently sits in the lead with 78.5 total points.

The first Falcon to compete was sophomore Emilio Acosta (El Paso, Texas). In his first championship round matchup, Acosta was defeated by a 15-2 major decision. In the consolation bracket, Acosta was beaten by a 15-0 tech fall.

At 133 pounds, junior Gabe Rodriguez (Las Vegas, Nev.) was defeated in his first championship bracket match by a 5-4 decision. In the consolation bracket, Rodriguez made some noise with a 1:53 fall victory as well as an 11-10 decision win to earn 3.5 team points for the Falcons. He was defeated in the fourth round of the consolation bracket by a 15-5 major decision.

At 141 pounds, senior Austin Vincent (Stockton, Ill.) won his first round in the championship bracket by a 5-4 decision. He dropped his second round in the championship bracket as well as his first round in the consolation bracket by a 6-0 decision and a sudden victory – 1 respectively. Vincent scored one team point for the Falcons.

In the 149-pound weight class, freshman Bryce Claypool (Morris, Ill.) was defeated in both of his first-round matchups by falls at 5:00 and 1:29.

Leading the Falcons team was junior Jack O'Donnell (Huntington Beach, Calif.). O'Donnell scored 7.5 team points with a quarterfinal appearance after a 6:42 fall victory and a 5-4 decision victory. He was defeated in the quarterfinals by 5:59 fall. 

In the consolation bracket, O'Donnell took the 9-4 decision victory.

The 165-pound weight class was occupied by junior Quinn Hoopman (Cedar Grove, Wis.). In his first championship bracket matchup, Hoopman was defeated by a 2:29 fall. He was able to score one total team point in the consolation bracket with an 8-5 decision won as well as a 6-3 decision win. He was defeated in this third matchup by a 10-6 decision.

Junior Carson Cook (Las Vegas, Nev.) took on the 174-pound class. Cook was defeated in his first matchup by a 1:23 fall and in his consolation matchup by an 11-1 major decision.

The Second leading Falcon point-getter was sophomore Peyton Smith (Milwaukee, Wis.) Smith recorded five total points with two fall victories in the consolation bracket after a fall defeat in the championship first round. 

Smith was knocked out in the consolation bracket's third round by a 10-0 major decision.

Senior Reid McNeill (Bristol, Wis.) was able to score one team point for the Falcons with a decision win in the second round of consolation. In his first matchup, McNeill was defeated by a 15-0 tech fall. 

He was also defeated in his last matchup in the consolation bracket by a 4:14 fall.

Junior Jerrell Carey (Chicago, Ill.) took on the heavyweights. He was defeated by fall at 2:21 in his first matchup in the championship bracket. He was also defeated in his first matchup of the consolation bracket by an 8-1 decision.

The Falcons turn their attention to day two of the Pete Wilson Invitational tomorrow.
