Falcons Bruise Bobcats in Home Opener

MEQUON, Wis. – The CUW wrestling team had their first dual inside the R. John Buuck for the 2021-22 season posting a 39-6 victory over the Bobcats of Bryant and Stratton.

The Falcons started with an exhibition at the 133-pound weight class.  This exhibition saw Corey Bagby (Salem, N.J.) drop the first matchup by a 2-11 major decision.

The next matchup was another from the 133 pounders with junior Gabe Rodriguez (Las Vegas, Nev.) losing by decision.

A couple of Falcons scored off of forfeits.  The four Falcons that scored from forfeits were senior Val Kochiu (Oak Creek, Wis.), junior Jack O'Donnell (Huntington Beach, Calif.), junior Quinn Hoopman (Cedar Grove, Wis.), and sophomore Peyton Smith (Milwaukee, Wis.).

At the 149-pound weight class, sophomore Lucas Regnier (Bradley, Ill.) went down 3-11 early in the matchup.  Regnier came back to make it 8-11 and was inches away from the four-point near fall when the buzzer sounded ending the matchup.

Junior Carson Cook (Las Vegas, Nev.) was down 4-5 going into the second period when Cook was able to register a fall at 3:00.

Another Falcon that was able to pick up the fall was junior Dalton Sell (Muscatine, Iowa) in just 2:58.

The final matchup was the 285-pond weight class that pitted Cam Mercer, a sophomore from Glenview, Illinois, against Angelo Rivera.  After a 0-0 first period, Mercer recorded an escape in the second ending the period up 1-0.   The third period saw Mercer starting up and registering a near fall for four points before Rivera was able to escape.  Mercer had yet another takedown to which Rivera escaped ending the period with a major decision of 11-2 in favor of Mercer.

The Falcons continue their homestand in the annual CUW Open inside the Fieldhouse on Nov. 20.
