Wrestling competes at Border Brawl duals

WHITEWATER, Wis. – Sean Ambrocio and Mason Baumgartner led Concordia University Wisconsin on Saturday at the Border Brawl duals, hosted by UW-Whitewater. The Falcons fell to No. 2 UW-Whitewater 32-12, defeated UW-Eau Claire 40-9 and lost to No. 11 Cornell College 24-22.

Senior Sean Ambrocio (San Antonio, Texas) and sophomore Mason Baumgarter (Slinger, Wis.) each finished the duals undefeated at 3-0. Sophomore Joshua Curcio (Granger, Ind.), sophomore Mason Mergener (Crivitz, Wis.) and senior Jake Reuteler (New Berlin, Wis.) each wrestled to a 2-1 record.

The Falcons had a difficult day, but improved throughout the duals and won 15 of the possible 30 individual bouts.

CUW (5-4) won just three bouts against No. 2 UW-Whitewater. Ambrocio won by decision, 8-3, at 133 pounds, while Mergener picked up an 8-1 decision at 174 pounds. Baumgartner earned a pin in 1:39 at 184 pounds.

Against UW-Eau Claire the Falcons won easily, as there were three bouts forfeited by the Blugolds. The 31-point victory is the largest in head coach Corey VanGroll's tenure. Junior Pierce Holtfreter (Las Vegas, Nev.) won his first bout of the season by major decision, 13-5, at 157 pounds. Senior Casey Kenealy (Hartford, Wis.) picked up a 9-5 decision win at 165 pounds, while Mergener earned a 7-1 decision victory at 174 pounds. Baumgartner won his seven bout of the season by fall, 1:18, at 184 pounds while Reuteler also had his seven win by fall, 2:47, of the season at 197 pounds.

The Falcons and Rams went back-and-forth in the final dual of the season, as there were five lead changes. Ambrocio won by fall, 2:11 at 133 pounds and Curcio also won by fall, 4:05, at 141 pounds to give CUW a 12-4 lead early in the dual. The Rams won four-consecutive bouts to take a 14-12 lead. The Falcons answered with a Baumgartner major decision, 10-0, at 184 pounds and a Reuteler win by fall, 3:40, to retake the lead, 22-18. Cornell earned a pin in the 285 pound bout to earn the victory.

CUW returns to action on Friday and Saturday for the Pete Wilson Invitational, hosted by Wheaton College.
