Ambrocio, Reuteler win titles at MSOE Invitational

MILWAUKEE – Sean Ambrocio and Jake Reuteler led Concordia University Wisconsin with first place finishes at the MSOE Invitational on Saturday. The Falcons finished in second place as a team.

Ambrocio (senior, San Antonio, Texas) was named the tournament Most Outstanding Wrestler after dominating the 133-pound bracket. He won his first bout by fall in 1:54 over Mitchell Schwahn (UW-Platteville), before earning back-to-back win by technical fall. Ambrocio cruised by Preston Adams (Central College), 20-3 and Tom Foy (Wheaton College), 16-0. His closest bout of the day came against Aaron Anderson (Central College) in which he won by major decision, 9-1, to take home the trophy.

Reuteler (senior, New Berlin, Wis.) performed extremely well on the mat and won consecutive bouts by fall to advance to the title match. He pinned Robert Caulfield (St. Olaf College) in 1:59 before sticking Josh Cannon (UW-Platteville) in 37 seconds. He captured the 197-pound trophy after an 11-7 decision win over Matt Seabold (Central College).

Senior Casey Kenealy (Hartford, Wis.) and sophomore Mason Baumgartner (Slinger, Wis.) placed second in their respective weight divisions to help the Falcons.

Kenealy began his day in the 165-pound bracket by pinning Matthew Wiersema (Wheaton College) in 2:50. He then won a pair of bouts by decision to advance to the title match. Kenealy defeated Dillon Anderson (Central College), 3-0 and Mitchell Fucile (Lakeland College), 2-1 TB-1. He fell by decision, 3-2, in the championship bout to Stephen Aiello (Wheaton College).

Baumgartner was impressive in the 184-pound division with three-straight wins to advance to the title bout. He began his day with a technical fall win, 16-0, over Eddie Terres (Lakeland College). Baumgartner then pinned Khial Jamison (Hannibal La-Grage University) in 1:54 prior to winning by decision, 11-4, over Korey Kleinhans (UW-Oshkosh). He couldn't get by Tyler Lowy (Central College) in the title bout and lost by decision, 6-3.

Sophomore Joshua Curcio (Granger, Ind.) and sophomore Mason Mergener (Crivitz, Wis.) performed well in their weight bracket and took third place.

Curcio won a pair of bouts by decision and another by major decision in the 141-pound bracket. He began his day with a 12-2 major decision win against Jacob Somann (UW-Platteville) before losing by decision, 12-7, to move to the consolation portion of the bracket. He advanced a round after a medical forfeit win to pin Holden Thompson (Wheaton College) in 1:56. Curcio then won back-to-back bouts by decision against Justin Wolfenden (MSOE), 5-4, and David Leisgang (UW-Oshkosh), 9-7 SV.

Mergener had three wins by decision and a pin in the 174-pound bracket. He defeated Aaric Spencer (UW-Platteville) by decision, 3-0, before losing an 8-7 decision to move the consolation side of the bracket. Mergener then won by decision, 4-0, against his teammate Mitchell Slatton (CUW) prior to pinning Greg Ventris (Knox College) in 1:50. He ended his day with a close 8-7 decision win over Caleb Odell (Wheaton College).

CUW will next compete on Friday, Dec. 19 in a dual meet at Wheaton College at 5:30 p.m.
