Muller's two goals power Women's Hockey to win over Finlandia

HANCOCK, Mich. – Freshman Brandi Muller scored a pair of first period goals to help lead the Concordia University Wisconsin Women's Hockey team to a 2-1 victory over Finlandia University Saturday afternoon at the Houghton County Arena. The win gave CUW a weekend sweep over the Lions, giving them a 2-0-0 start for the second time in program history.

All the scoring occurred in the first 20 minutes as Muller (Anchorage, Alaska) opened the scoring 3:54 into play. Fellow freshman Veronika Metanova (Palatine, Ill.) assisted on the game's first goal.

Finlandia evened things up with 8:32 remaining in the opening period when Siera Hache tallied a goal. Theresa Wolf and Lindsey Jackman assisted on the Hache equalizer. The score would be tied 1-1 for 4:43 as Muller pushed the Falcons back on top with 3:49 remaining in the first stanza.

Defense was the story over the final two periods as junior Jennifer DeGeorge (Waukesha, Wis.) and her counterpart, Breanna Hynes, kept the points off the scoreboard. DeGeorge totaled 18 saves, while Hynes recorded 35.

The penalty kill for both teams was impressive as the two combined to kill off all 12 power play attempts. CUW killed of seven FU power play opportunities, while the Falcons when 0-for-5 with the extra skater advantage. The two teams combined for 13 penalties for 26 minutes, the Falcons committing eight for 16 total minutes.

Muller now has four points in two games for the Falcons as she has accustomed herself to the college game quite nicely. The Falcons offense already appears to be improving from last season, having scored 10 times in two contests.

CUW will return to action next Saturday when they host Augsburg College in their home opener. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m. The Falcons and Auggies will play again on Sunday and live coverage will be available from CUWFalcons.com.
