Day Defends NACC Title in Javelin
MILWAUKEE, Wis. – After the first day of competition from the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) Outdoor Track & Field Championships, the CUW men's team sits in sixth place with 15 total points.
Meanwhile, MSOE currently sits atop the leaderboard with 70 total points.
In total, CUW gathered 14 points in the throwing events and one in the jumps.
For the fourth consecutive season, senior Seth Day (Sunset Hills, Mo.) claimed the gold medal in the javelin with a 51.21-meter throw, setting a personal record. Day's first-place throw came in his second attempt of six, beating the next competitor by nearly four meters. Furthermore, his mark puts him fourth all-time for CUW men's track and field record.
Behind Day was freshman Zach Wendland (Green Bay, Wis.) in fifth, who recorded a throw of 44.89 meters and secured four team points.
The pole vault saw the Blue and White pick up one point as junior Nate Waech (West Bend, Wis.) cleared a height of 3.96 meters for eighth place. Like Day, Waech etched his name into the CUW record book, as his mark broke his last season's mark and put's him at sixth all-time.
The 110-meter hurdles saw three Falcons qualify for finals as junior Bernie Van Den Heuvel (Valders, Wis.), led the flock with a fourth-place finish and a time of 15.89 seconds. Meanwhile, freshman Zach Wendland (Green Bay, Wis.) took seventh at 16.60, while sophomore Brandon Donahue (Slinger, Wis.) punched his ticket in tomorrow's action with an eighth-place finish at 16.84. Van Den Heuvel and Wendland's times enter the top-10 all-time.
CUW also found success in the 400-meter hurdles. Freshman Zach Wendland (Green Bay, Wis.) took second overall, earning him a spot in the finals. Wendland compiled a time of 57.67 seconds. Once again, Wendland's time put him sixth all-time in CUW men's track and field history.
Meanwhile, freshman Josh Sipes (Charleston, Ill.) qualified after crossing the finish line with a time of 1:01.11.
The NACC Championships will continue tomorrow from Wisconsin Lutheran College, where the Falcons will look to climb the leaderboard and end the season on a high note.
