Field Hockey Forces Overtime in CFHC Quarterfinals

SEWANEE, Tenn. – The Concordia Wisconsin field hockey team closed the book on the 2024 season on Thursday afternoon. The Falcons fell short to the Colonels of Centre in the Collegiate Field Hockey Conference Tournament Quarterfinals in the three-versus-six matchup. The Colonels collected the 3-2 overtime victory to improve to 8-10 on the season.

The Colonels had the first look of the contest with a handful of penalty corners but sophomore Parks Cawthray (Oakville, Ontario) had three saves, and sophomore Emily Robertson (Canton, Mich.) stopped the ball with a defensive save.

Centre held a 7-0 advantage in shots and a 4-0 advantage in corners after the first quarter, but the score remained tied at zero.

The Falcons drew first blood in the first minute of the second quarter. Sophomore Leah Mouganis (Pittsburgh, Pa.) stole the ball and sent it down the field where junior Katelyn Cardinale had the first shot when sophomore Caitlyn Weitzel (Fallston, Md.) had a secondary chance and senior Paige Armijo (Reseda, Calif.) showed why she earned All-CFHC honors when she smacked the ball into the back of the cage.

Centre tied the contest on a second-chance opportunity seven minutes later.

The two teams went into halftime tied at one.

In the 39th minute, the Colonels claimed the lead with a goal on a penalty corner.

The Black and Gold took a 2-1 lead into the fourth quarter.

Paige Armijo had a shot blocked in the 49th minute.

The Falcons also had their first corner of the contest in the 49th minute.

CUW had another corner moments later, where the Falcons inched the ball closer to the cage but the Colonels cleared the ball out of harm's way.

The Birds had an opportunity late in the fourth quarter on a penalty stroke but the Centre goalie came up with the stick save.

Caitlyn Weitzel scored at the back door off a pass from Paige Armijo to tie the game in the 57th minute.

Centre had a pair of penalty corners in the final minute, but Parks Cawthray stopped the Colonels to force overtime.

Thursday was the first overtime contest for the Falcons since September 7 at Kenyon.

Centre drew a penalty stroke in the 62nd minute and scored to advance in the tournament.

The Black and Gold finished with a 30-6 advantage in shots and a 12-3 margin in penalty corners.

Parks Cawthray battled for the afternoon and had 19 saves in the contest. The 19 saves is a career-high for Cawthray.

Paige Armijo led the flock in her final game with three shots. Katelyn Cardinale had two shots.

Thursday was the first-ever day of the CFHC Conference Tournament with Sewanee defeating Marian in the first quarterfinals match of the day.

With the victory, Centre advances to the CFHC Semifinals and will face Mary Washington. Rhodes will battle Sewanee on Friday in the other semifinals contest.

The Falcons finish the season at 2-15 and will return to flight in the fall of 2025.
