MEQUON, Wis. – The Falcons soared in an early morning contest on Saturday. The Concordia Wisconsin field hockey team avenged an early season overtime loss to Kenyon with a 2-1 victory over the Owls. The Blue and White improved to 2-9 on the year with the victory.
The Owls jumped out of the gates on Saturday had had two shots that were saved by sophomore Parks Cawthray (Oakville, Ont.) in the first 64 seconds. The Falcons responded 40 seconds later with a shot from junior Katie Quirke (Antioch, Ill.).
The Falcons scored with 1:13 left in the first quarter off the stick of Katie Quirke on an assist from junior Katelyn Cardinale (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) off a penalty corner from sophomore Caitlyn Weitzel (Fallston, Md.).
The Blue and White started the second quarter with quality chances from senior Paige Armijo (Reseda, Calif.) and freshman Rylee Binley (Suffolk, Va.) that were saved.
In the 26th minute, Paige Armijo put the Falcons up two goals with a goal in a scrum in front of the net.
Kenyon had three penalty corners in the final minute of the second quarter but the CUW defense kept the ball out of the cage.
The Owls struck back at the end of the third quarter with a goal in the 44th minute.
The Falcons had an opportunity in the 50th minute but the shot from Katie Quirke was saved.
Despite earning a green card, the Falcons did not allow a shot in the final 10 minutes.
The Owls held a 20-13 advantage in shots on Saturday.
Parks Cawthray collected 15 saves in the victory.
Katie Quirke led the Concordia attack with six shots, with five on goal.
The Falcons will celebrate senior day on Sunday against Sewanee.
