Field Hockey Quiets the Quakers

MEQUON, Wis. – The Concordia Wisconsin field hockey team opened the home portion of the schedule in winning fashion on Sunday. The Falcons picked up a 2-1 victory to bounce back to 1-1 on the young season.

The Falcons opened the game with three shots in the first quarter with shots from freshman Naomi Little (Hartland, Wis.), junior Katelyn Cardinale (Mount Laurel, N.J.) and freshman Rylee Binley (Suffolk, Va.).

The Quakers were able to take advantage of a green card in the second quarter and had four shots, with three on net.

Earlham took the lead late in the third quarter with a goal off a rebound.

The Falcons responded with a goal at 13:25, where junior Katie Quirke (Antioch, Ill.) blasted a missile from 11 yards out of a pass from sophomore Leah Mouganis (Pittsburgh, Pa.).

Three minutes later, sophomore Caitlyn Weitzel (Fallston, Md.) sent the ball in, which reached Katie Quirke and was then redirected into the net by senior Paige Armijo (Reseda, Calif.).

The Falcons' defense shut the Quakers down the rest of the day.

Freshman Carlijn van der Bend (Voorburg, Netherlands) recorded her first victory of her career with four saves. Sophomore Parks Cawthray (Oakville, Ont.) collected two saves on Sunday.

The Birds edged Earlham in the shot column on Sunday, 12-10. Katelyn Cardinale, Paige Armijo, Katie Quirke and Caitlyn Weitzel all had two shots.

The Falcons will set up camp in Ohio for the next four contests. CUW will face Kenyon on Saturday.
